Setting up FTP Accounts
Overview
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to connect directly to your hosting account and manage website files using an FTP application such as FileZilla, Cyberduck, or WinSCP.
You can create additional FTP accounts for developers, designers, or team members and limit access to specific folders within your website.

Accessing FTP Accounts
To manage FTP users:
- Log in to your hosting control panel.
- Select Manage Hosting.
- Click on your hosting package.
- In the hosting dashboard, locate and click FTP Accounts.
You will be taken to the FTP management page where you can create and manage FTP users.
Create a New FTP Account
To add a new FTP user:
- Open FTP Accounts.
- Locate the Add a New FTP Account section.
- Enter a username in the Username field.
- Select the domain from the Domain dropdown.
- Choose the folder the user should have access to using the Subdirectory field.
- Click Create FTP Account.
The system will generate the FTP account and login details.

Understanding the Account Settings
Username
Enter a unique username for the FTP account.
Example:
developer
The username becomes part of the FTP login credentials.
Domain
Select the website the FTP account should be associated with.
Example:
@autoscale.uk
Subdirectory
Choose which folder the FTP user can access.
By default, the folder is:
public_html
This gives access to your website files.
You can also select a specific folder if you only want the user to access part of the website.
Examples:
public_html/blog
public_html/images
public_html/client-files
Restricting Access to Specific Folders
One of the main benefits of additional FTP accounts is limiting access.
For example:
- A designer may only need access to the
/imagesfolder. - A developer may only need access to the
/blogfolder. - A client may only need access to a documents directory.
This helps keep the rest of your website secure.
