What Do These Numbers Mean?

File permissions are displayed as three-digit numbers.

Common examples include:

  • 600 - Only the account owner can read and modify the file.
  • 644 - The owner can modify the file, while others can only read it.
  • 755 - Commonly used for folders and executable files.

For sensitive files, more restrictive permissions are often recommended.

Fixing Permission Issues

If the checker finds issues:

  1. Locate the affected file in the results list.
  2. Review the recommended permission value.
  3. Apply the recommended permissions using the available fix option.

Once updated, the file will meet the recommended security settings.

Why File Permissions Matter

Correct permissions help:

  • Protect sensitive files.
  • Prevent unauthorized access.
  • Improve website security.
  • Reduce the risk of accidental changes.

Most websites should use the recommended permissions unless instructed otherwise by a developer.
